The Framework I Use to Build a School List That Actually Works
Most applicants build their school list by starting with rankings, adding the brand names they recognize, and then trying to bend themselves to fit the schools.
That is not how you get in. The way you do it is to build your school list as you develop your narrative, because the two inform each other and you end up applying to schools that are a genuine fit. Admissions committees read thousands of applications and can spot generic interest from a mile away.
My latest video walks through the four lenses I use with every student:
- Career fit. Does the program actually get students to the outcome you want? Do not just read the employment report. Go on LinkedIn and look at where graduates land in your target industry, function, and geography, then reach out to alumni. Those conversations reveal insights you will never get from a website. If the outcomes do not match where you are headed, move on. Rankings do not matter in this case.
- Academic fit. Does the curriculum, learning model, and faculty match how you learn? Top programs are not interchangeable. Some are case-method heavy, some lecture-based and quantitative, some deeply experiential. You are investing one to two years of your life, so match yourself to the model that works for you.
- Cultural fit. This one is especially important for international applicants. Class size, peer profile, location, and community vibe shape your actual day-to-day experience. A 900-student class in a major city is fundamentally different from a 200-student class in a small town. Neither is better. Read student blogs, watch student videos, talk to current students, and visit if you can. If you cannot see yourself thriving there, the brand name is not worth it.
- Personal fit. Can you actually attend? Cost, financial aid, visa considerations, location relative to family, program duration, and language of instruction all belong here. This is the lens applicants skip most often and regret most. The schools you cannot realistically attend should not be on your list, no matter how prestigious.
Get your school list right and the rest of the process becomes much easier. Get it wrong, and no amount of essay polishing will get you in.

Thatβs it for this week.
